Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been at the heart of research efforts by the international community for several years. The fields of application are varied ranging from medical monitoring to food traceability through smart building or urban monitoring (pollution, noise, electrical consumption ...). Energy efficiency has recently emerged as the main problem in WSN. The sensor nodes are powered by a battery which is very limited resources in terms of energy. In this paper, a hybrid differential evolution algorithm (DE) and BAT algorithm based energy-efficient clustering is proposed to improve the lifetime of the sensor devices. Initially, the clusters are formed using the adapted DE algorithm. Then, using an adapted BAT algorithm, we find the best solution for the Inter-cluster communication phase. The simulation results demonstrate that our hybrid DE algorithm and BAT algorithm based energy-efficient clustering protocol (DEBAT) considerably enhances network lifetime over other techniques.
